Do you want an easy way to save money and save the earth at the same time?  Try growing your own vegetables.  Homegrown vegetables taste better, they retain more of their nutrients, and they are cheaper.  The vegetables shipped to your local grocery store start losing their nutritional value within a week of leaving the farm.  Check out the following list of easy to grow vegetables.

    1. Tomatoes are the number one vegetable grown by home gardeners.  Even if you live in an apartment you can grow tomatoes in a container.  Each tomato plant should yield a bushel of fruit.
    2. 2. Leaf lettuce grows continuously and can be harvested a little at a time during the entire growing season allowing many tasty salads.  Leaf lettuce comes in a huge variety and can also be container grown.
    3. 3. Cucumbers traditionally take more room to grow because they grow on a vine, but new methods of growing cucumbers on a trellis have reduced the area required to produce a bumper crop.
    4. 4. Carrots, a root vegetable that produces a lot of nutritional bang for the buck.  Carrot seeds are very inexpensive and can be sewn in stages stretching out the harvest.
    5. 5. Radishes are similar to carrots in that they are a root vegetable and are very inexpensive to grow.  Both vegetables can be sewn in a just a few feet of earth and produce a lot of produce.
    6. 6. Zucchini squash can be trellis grown to reduce the space needed to grow the normally sprawling vine.  In recent years zucchini have really come into vogue with trendy chefs so there are many tasty recipes to utilize this versatile vegetable.
    7. 7. Acorn squash tend to do best grown on the ground versus trellis growing, but many home gardeners have found that growing them in raised beds reduces the footprint needed to produce this wonderful squash.
    8. 8. Snap Peas lend themselves to different uses.  If you pick pea pods before the peas form you can use them in salads or stir-fries.  Peas grow best when allowed to climb.  Peas can be harvested every few days.  Peas are a cool weather crop and can be started before many other vegetables.
    9. 9. Asparagus is a great companion plant to plant with tomatoes.  The tomato repels the asparagus beetle and the asparagus may keep away root pests that can affect the tomato plant.  It’s best to harvest the asparagus spears when they are about the size of a pencil so the stalks remain tender.
    10. Cabbage rounds out this list of easy to grow vegetables.  Cabbage is a hardy vegetable that is easy to be successful with if proper pest prevention is used.  There are many varieties of cabbage such as purple or Savoy.  Green cabbage is the most commonly grown in the home garden.
